Play, in all forms, helps in building confidence at all ages. Sport can do wonders in tapping a child’s true potential and encouraging them to be the very best they can.
Why is playing team games, in particular, so powerful and have such a massive contribution to make to the education of all our children?
The answer to this question is that, at the heart of all team games, there are three concepts that are central to us as humans:
- The first one is challenge. Collaborating with friends to overcome rivals is an age-old concept. In this modern world, they provide a rare opportunity for meaningful connection.
- Secondly, team games stimulate all the emotions that provide the sense of belonging and purpose those being compassion, teamwork and sacrifice. There is a significance to the outcomes of contests against other groups which cannot be achieved internally.
- Thirdly, games at their best are a source of personal meaning to those taking part and this is the highest source of human happiness. Central to this, is selflessness and service to others, activities which science has demonstrated can bring the highest levels of personal satisfaction. It is because of this collective striving, those moments of magic in team games are accurately recalled twenty years later and passed from generation to generation. They are attached to the feelings of personal meaning!!!
