The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a rigorous programme offered in grades 6 - 10 that balances challenging academics, service learning and positive learning attitudes. The programme builds strong knowledge and skills while making practical connections between learning experiences and the real world.
The MYP not only develops subject specific knowledge and skills but also empowers students to inquire, apply and connect their understanding to the world around them. The goal is for students to be creative, critical and reflective thinkers.
The IB has published research findings highlighting the value of an IB education for students. Through this research, it is identified that MYP students:
It is important at SISQ that all students feel a sense of belonging and care while at the school. Our Advisory programme does this by supporting students' personal and social well-being. Each student will have a homeroom tutor who will support and advocate for them. The Advisory programme will concentrate on developing skill in topics such as goal setting, self-management, service learning and socio-emotional well-being. Our homeroom tutors will be there to listen to students' concerns, believe in their potential and support their success.
Currently our Grade 7 to 10 classes have a boys and girls class. We are also introducing a combined boys / girls class in Grades 7 and 8. We recognise that some students learn better in a single gender class while others prefer a combined class in the middle years. This option provides the unique opportunity for our families in these grades to have a choice that will support their educational and social needs. We are intending on expanding this choice to include Grade 9 next year. Grade 6, 11 and 12 combine students into mixed boys / girls classes.
Student Leadership is an integral part of secondary school. Our student council is composed of an executive team and grade level representatives. Together they give our student body a strong voice in the development of our school culture, events and service learning. Student council members also receive formal leadership training and opportunities to be involved in meaningful and authentic school events.
Students outside of the student council can also be involved in student leadership through the Service as Action and CAS programs. These programs involve students in service learning projects and volunteer opportunities that benefit the community both within and outside of school. Involvement in service learning to benefit others is a very important component of the secondary school culture.
We are very proud to have an experienced and caring faculty for our students. It is a truly international group of teachers coming from all over the world. Majority of our secondary teachers hold an advanced degree. It is important at SISQ that all students feel a sense of belonging and care while at the school and our teachers are committed to connecting with our students and supporting both their academic as well as well-being needs.
Many of our MYP teachers are also our Diploma teachers. This ensures that our MYP programs contain the rigour, content, skills and attitudes necessary for students to be prepared to enter the challenging Diploma Program in grades 11 and 12.
At SISQ, the Enrichment Activity Programme is part of our approach to educating the whole person. It provides our students with the opportunities and challenges necessary to develop skills, attitudes and competencies for success in school, college and beyond. A wide range of both free and paid activities is offered to SISQ students. Meanwhile, the Community Activities include a wide range of sports, artistic and modern languages activities open to the entire community, including adults and children no matter which school they come from.
