In Mathematics the unit of inquiry is numbers, however the degree of complexity varies between the grades. Grade 6 have been looking at how understanding, representing and connecting numbers can help us appreciate their complexity. Our next unit is on comparing quantities; we will be inquiring into how ratios, rates and percentages in real data help us appreciate Qatar’s rapid development. Grade 7 students are looking in more depth at numbers and where they fit within the number system. They have been fascinated by rational and irrational numbers and how Pi has 2.7 trillion digits! In the next unit they will study straight line graphs and their project will involve solving how to maximize purchases with a limited budget. Grade 8 students have focused on the importance of writing large numbers and very small numbers using scientific notation and how this can be applied in Science when looking at the size of cells and the distance between planets. Their next unit will also focus on linear and nonlinear graphs and how they can be applied in a business situation.
