What a full week of being busy in the dolphin class. We have learnt lots of new songs in all of the different areas of learning. One of our favourite songs is about the little turtle finger puppet called Tiny Tim who comes out when the children are doing their best listening. We have also learnt a song that helps us know what to do when we are feeling happy, sad or angry. The children have enjoyed all the different Maths activities, especially the spotty dog game: children learn to find how many spots are on the dog. Then, they run the card over and see how many bones they have. The person with the most bones at the end is the winner. This incorporates not only counting skills but also using the language of more/fewer. Furthermore, it encourages turn taking and sharing with the children.

Grade 3 have been learning about the Learner Profile, and establishing an essential agreement for learning in the classroom. We used a thinking routine called 'Philosophy for Children - P4C'. This thinking routine allows the students to first Think about their choice, Commit to their choice, Justify their choice, and lastly Reflect on their choice. This thinking routine was used to rank certain behaviours which then lead on to discussions about the Grade 3 classroom essential agreement. This routine also allowed students to identify statements and pictures that connected to each of the Learner Profiles: Reflective, Balanced, Communicator, Principled, Thinker, Inquirer, Caring, Risk-Taker/Courageous, Knowledgeable, Open-Minded.

It's been a dynamic start for English at SISQ. Grade 6s have begun by exploring the IB Learner Profile attributes, which are at the core of the IB. They have unpacked the terms, and 6A presented their work to Grade 5 learners this week. They will now move to the first unit of study entitled 'My Brilliant World,' which involves a study of the graphic novel genre and culminates in a piece of autobiographical writing in that style. Grade 7 and 8 students are considering how our experiences and relationships shape us. This line of inquiry will result in a personal photo journal, in which students chronicle specific relationships and moments in their lives. They have begun to generate ideas for this in the form of a life map, which is a graphic presentation of their life so far.
