Following the Primary Years Parent Information Evening, please find below the questions you've asked and Ms. Anderson's answers:
Children are exposed to French print in every lesson and by recognising words in different contexts with many visual cues they are readily developing reading skills. Teachers are sensitive to the individual language profile of each student and do recognise that French can be the 3rd or even 4th language a student is learning. The approach in KG - G1 is to focus on communication skills through speaking and listening. This aligns with the PYP philosophy of the multi-lingual classroom. The G2 - G5 programme expects more accuracy in reading and pronunciation skills, progressing to the use of higher level reading skills and exposure to more complex texts mirroring the English Language programme.
The SISQ approach is to encourage positive home learning experiences for all curriculum areas. The most powerful tool for home language learning is for you to engage in learning the language along with your children. I am making an assumption here in that the language learning options at SISQ were important for you in selecting our school. They are many resources online that you can access and please contact our French teachers who can direct you to these.
I have to confess that I am not sure about the reference to this question; is it speaking to published texts, general library books or something else. Please email me if this is your question and we can get into more detail.
