Our world is changing rapidly and the face of education has changed dramatically over recent years so that as adults, and whether as parents or educators, we often find ourselves commenting about what the future will hold for today’s young children.
We cannot be entirely sure ‘exactly’ what type of knowledge, tools or skills they will need. However, here at the Swiss International School of Qatar we are in complete alignment with many expert educationalists in acknowledging that our students will need something beyond their excellent academic skills in order to prepare for 21st century life and careers.
Twenty-first century skills are indeed a hot topic in education today and these skills been labelled as the new ‘building blocks’ for learning.
The skills are a blend of both old and new – encompassing the traditional academics of language, literacy, mathematics and science with essential life skills such as collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, innovation, technology and global awareness.
While some of these 21st century skills may not seem so immediately relevant for young children, the Early Years team here at SISQ are aware that it is in fact crucial to provide this foundation and these specific building blocks at such an early age.
It is one of the reasons we were so excited to be celebrating World Children’s Day together for the very first time and as a brand new school on 20th November 2017.
There was a real buzz as the entire PYP (Primary) phase of school gathered in our wonderful gymnasium to work together on their dance in support of the World Children’s day message #kidstakeover
The PYP students really did take over at that point! It was a pleasure to see three year old Pre-KG students dancing and singing alongside ten and eleven year old Grade 5 students. They certainly had fun. Although, even our very youngest early years students were aware that behind it was a serious message...and that not all children across the world are as fortunate as themselves.
This particular opportunity and many others we provide for students here at SISQ are integral to the IB and PYP curriculum and they support children in learning the critical 21st century skill of collaboration whilst building genuine connections and friendships at the very same time.
It provides our students with a rather special international mindedness and their ability to collaborate and communicate effectively across cultures and borders develops them as global citizens and provides our three, four and five year olds with an excellent foundation for life. The real building blocks to success in a fast changing world.
We simply can’t wait to see who and what they become!
