Recently, some of our students started to work on a ‘A Day in the Life of a SISQ student’ video as part of their electives programme. While planning the video, I discussed with students what a typical day may look like and we quickly realised that every day is different and it would be very difficult to capture a ‘typical’ day in a three minute video. It is exactly this that makes SISQ so special; there is no such thing as a typical SISQ student and no such thing as a typical day. Each student is different and each student is given the opportunity to pursue their talents and discover what they are passionate about. For example, we have students who wish to do as much as they can to help younger students so they spend time each week in Early Years classrooms reading to younger members of our community. There are students who have recently started playing musical instruments and are given opportunities in the week to go and practice, while others wish to improve their language skills and attend additional support sessions in their free time.
What also struck me while discussing the short video with students, was how much confidence our MYP students have gained in such a short space of time. In September, they joined us from a myriad of schools across Qatar, and indeed the world, but very quickly they have become a community made up of individuals who work and play together every day. They have a quiet determination about them and a ‘can-do’ attitude that we have worked hard to foster and harness. They are the best ambassadors we can have; they feel cared for and safe enough to take risks and develop a strong sense of self.
