At Swiss International School, Qatar (SISQ), we believe that leadership begins from the very start of a child’s learning journey. In Pre-K and Kindergarten, leadership may not look like standing in front of a group or giving a speech, but it begins in subtle, meaningful ways, through choice, responsibility, and reflection. These early experiences form the building blocks of confidence, independence, and self-awareness.
We give students age-appropriate opportunities to develop ownership of their learning. Children are encouraged to make decisions, not only about what to play with, but how to engage. Will I build my tower from sand, blocks, or mud? These moments of choice encourage independence and decision-making. As they grow, students begin to reflect on their actions, ask how they can improve, and even start setting personal goals. For some, this may mean deciding to tidy up without being asked; for others, it may involve managing their time between work and play.
Our classrooms, often described as the “third teacher” are intentionally designed to support leadership and autonomy. Flexible seating, accessible materials, and walls filled with authentic student work create a space where children feel ownership and pride. Teachers act as facilitators, encouraging deep questioning, giving space for curiosity, and supporting student-led inquiry. This kind of environment fosters not only learning, but a growing sense of personal agency.
At SISQ, we also emphasise the importance of kindness, empathy, and community service. Our students are taught to respect and care for one another. Recently, our students participated in a toy collection for children in need—just one example of how even our youngest learners are already thinking beyond themselves and showing leadership through action.
Ultimately, our vision: Fulfilled, Inspired, and Prepared reflects the kind of learners we strive to develop. By nurturing leadership from the early years, we are guiding our students to become thoughtful, compassionate, and confident global citizens of tomorrow.
